The concept of searching the Earth like a vast digital database has existed for years in scientific and technical discussions, but recent advances in artificial intelligence are finally making it practical. At the center of this shift is Earth Index, a platform developed by the nonprofit Earth Genome that enables users to search satellite imagery based on visual similarity rather than traditional map analysis. Instead of manually reviewing massive datasets, users can simply highlight an example—such as a mining site, illegal airstrip, patch of deforestation, fishing vessel, or industrial facility—and ask the system to locate similar patterns across other regions of the world.

The technology behind Earth Index relies on powerful “foundation models” trained on enormous archives of Earth observation data collected from satellites over many years. These AI models can recognize recurring visual features across different geographies and time periods, transforming raw satellite imagery into searchable information. Previously, this type of geospatial analysis required teams of specialists, custom-built machine learning models, and expensive computing infrastructure. Investigations often took months to complete. By automating much of the pattern-recognition process, Earth Index dramatically lowers both the technical and financial barriers to conducting large-scale environmental investigations.

One notable example involved journalists using the platform to identify previously unreported narcotrafficking airstrips hidden within the Peruvian Amazon. By combining automated satellite analysis with on-the-ground reporting, investigators were able to uncover activity that may otherwise have remained undetected. Similar projects have already used the system to map illegal gold mining in the Amazon, track quarry operations in the Balkans, monitor land-use changes, identify industrial livestock facilities, and even detect methane emissions linked to cattle operations.

A major strength of the platform is its accessibility. Earth Index now offers a publicly available “Open” tier that provides global access and core features without requiring a waitlist. More advanced tools, including API access and deeper computational searches, are available through a separate tier, although the developers intend to keep access free for researchers and organizations working on high-impact projects. Non-technical users can also upload their own reference imagery, create training labels, and share findings publicly, making the system useful not only for scientists but also for journalists, advocacy groups, and local communities.

Despite its promise, the system still has limitations. Much of the satellite imagery comes from publicly available sources with only moderate resolution and update frequency, reducing its effectiveness for real-time surveillance. Human interpretation also remains essential because false positives can occur, meaning AI-generated matches are not always accurate. In addition, the growing accessibility of geospatial AI raises concerns about oversight, ethics, and potential misuse. Nevertheless, by expanding access to advanced satellite analysis tools, Earth Index represents an important shift in how environmental monitoring and investigative research can be conducted worldwide.
